The 13th August marked our first ‘Morning on the Gallops’ experience with trainer Tom Dascombe.
We arrived driving down the incredible sweeping drive to the magnificent Manor House Stables for bacon sandwiches and coffee. It was a glorious sunny morning and the clouds stayed away despite a less than favourable forecast. The owners room at Tom’s over-looks the green fields on one side and the colt’s and gelding’s barn on the other.
We were greeted by one of the founders of Rewards4Racing, Josh Apiafi with some funny stories about him riding and working with Tom at Pond House for the great Martin Pipe back in the day. Colin, Tom’s assistant trainer then introduced himself and took us down to the gallops to watch the third string at work.
Colin’s informative and amusing tour continued, demonstrating a horse swimming in the equine pool – and Pudding, the Jack Russell who gave a fantastic demonstration on her doggy paddle! We were taken to the veterinary unit to see how the horses are cared for at all times including an experience of the vibration board – many of the members gave this a go! Something used by footballers and brought to the equine world to help improve the strength of legs and aid healing. Then on to the Colt’s and Gelding’s barn where we saw the likes of All Weather Champion, Kachy – who’s party trick is to stand with his tongue hanging out waiting for someone to come and pull it!
We then headed off to watch the newest recruits to the yard on the gallops, one having its first ever canter and Pudding – running up the gallops with the racehorses showing off her turn of foot! The staff at Manor House were absolutely brilliant, helpful, friendly and welcoming to a fantastic group of Rewards4Racing members.
The joy of owning a racehorse is indescribable and has given legendary footballer and racehorse owner Michael Owen, joint owner of Manor House Stables plenty of highs over the years. He wanted to give others the chance to experience this too so has set up the Michael Owen Racing Club; giving everyone the chance to get involved in this wonderful industry for a fraction of the cost of sole ownership.
So if you’ve ever dreamed of owning a racehorse but thought it was too expensive then a 12 month membership is the perfect solution. It costs just £35 per month or £399 a year and gives you opportunities such as a day at Manor House hosted by Michael, days out at Chester races and ballots for owners badges every time your horse runs.
