The Northumberland Plate Festival concludes with the Northumberland Plate Day featuring Madness Live After Racing. This is the most famous race meeting of the year at Newcastle, featuring the Northumberland Plate, a two mile heritage handicap worth £150,000, making it the richest two mile handicap in Europe.
The historic race previously known as the "Pitmen's Derby", formed the centrepiece of the holiday period known locally as "Race Week" for local mine workers. Today's Plate Day attracts a diverse crowd of racegoers and many ladies treat it as the North-East's version of Royal Ascot, but with a more relaxed and informal atmosphere.
The racing card also includes the Chipchase Stakes, a Group 3, six furlong sprint. This is one of only two Group 3 flat races staged at Newcastle Racecourse all year, the other being the Group 3 Hoppings Stakes, staged on the evening card before Plate Day. As well as top class racing, there will be the Best Dressed Male competition with plenty of fantastic prizes up for grabs.
Live after racing, iconic British Ska band Madness will be performing a full set, including many of their 15 top 10 UK singles. All tickets and packages include access to the racing and Madness concert afterwards.
